Adding a Membership Plugin to your WordPress site lets you take your content and revenue up a notch!
The “six million dollar question” is, which membership plugin is right for you?
Because I started my online career as a virtual business support professional, I have had the opportunity to work “intimately” with many of the systems currently on the market. What I have learned is that the system you need depends on what your goals are. What I also know is that MOST people whose online business includes a membership component, can achieve success without a lot of the bells and whistles that are associated with the more costly systems.
I was recently asked by a client which of two specific membership plugins I recommend and while I think they are both suitable to that particular client’s need, I did take the time to drill down into both to provide a comparison so that she could make the final decision.
The two membership plugins in questions are the popular WishList Member plugin and the newer kid on the block Member Genius.
Here is a chart that shows in general terms how these two stack up against each other. (information based on what I was able to find on the respective sites and in the plugins themselves)
MEMBERSHIP PLUGIN COMPARISON
|Installation||Typical plugin steps||Typical plugin steps|
|Payments||PayPal only||PayPal, plus many others|
|Auto Responder Intergration||Yes||Yes|
|$27 – 1 domain you own||$99 1 domain you own|
|$97 – unlimited sites you own||$247 unlimited domains you own plus several bonuses|
|Updates and support||1 year – both levels||1 year – both levels|
|Training Videos||Initial||Yes – both levels|
|Support Docs||No||Yes – both levels|
Although there are clearly some differences between the two and like everything else you pay more to get more, I would venture to say that for someone on a limited budget seeking to have a basic and minimal membership portal, either of these two plugins will work.
What you must remember however is to think not just about where your business is today but, be sure that which ever plugins you invest in, that you give some thought to growth and how they will factor into that scenario. Fortunately, like these two, many great plugins that help you turn your WordPress site into a more robust hub, the cost is affordable so having a limited shelf life for your particular site once your business starts to grow, is not such a huge concern.
If you use either of these two Membership plugins, I would love to hear your thoughts below.
